Headaches, Colds and Back Ache — Most Common Health Complaints: Nielsen Global Survey

August 30, 2007

A global health survey conducted by The Nielsen Company has found that headaches, colds, sleeping problems and back aches are the most common ailments of the world’s consumers, and when it comes to their treatment in an estimated $70 billion industry, consumers are loyal and habitual purchasers of over-the-counter (OTC) self-medication products.

According to Nielsen, headaches are the top complaint for consumers in the U.S. and around the world – and may explain why analgesics are the largest category in the OTC market. Nearly half of those polled in the online survey (42 percent) claimed to have suffered a headache in the last four weeks, while one in three had suffered a cold, back problem or sleeping problem. One in five suffered from a cough, sore throat, stomach upset or some other kind of pain.

The Nielsen survey found three factors influenced what consumers did when they fell ill: strong product loyalty towards ‘tried and tested’ brands they have always used; a reliance on medical professionals; and deeply rooted cultural ‘home remedies’ – especially in Central and Eastern European countries and throughout Asia.

Nielsen polled 26,486 Internet users in 47 markets1 from Europe, Asia Pacific, the Americas and the Middle East. Nearly half (42 percent) said they reached for their usual ‘tried and tested’ medication at home during times of ill health, and one in three either saw their doctor or visited a pharmacy in search of an over-the-counter recommendation.

Loyalty Factor

Overwhelmingly, the most loyal consumers of OTC/self-medication products are Asians – more than 80 percent of Hong Kong, Singaporean and Chinese consumers say they always buy the same ‘tried and tested’ products, while 68 percent of North Americans do so. Meanwhile, 77 percent of Thai consumers say they will ask for a pharmacists’ recommendation and consumers in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are most likely to go to the doctor for any kind of common health problem, largely due to the heavy cultural influence of respecting professional advice from medical experts.

“For OTC companies, the challenge lies in encouraging consumers to try new brands in a category characterized by auto-pilot purchasing, shopper loyalty and the added element of deep cultural traditions of self medication in many countries,” said Deepak Varma, senior vice president, Nielsen Customized Research. “We’ve found that humor and strong lifestyle associations with the local culture have proven successful, especially in emerging markets where the OTC market is immature but developing fast.”

Reliance on Medical Professionals

In North America, significantly more consumers indicated that they would visit the pharmacy when suffering from a minor ailment (35 percent) than visit the doctor (25 percent). In Europe, slightly more consumers claimed to visit the doctor (29 percent) than get a non-prescription medicine from the pharmacy (27 percent). However, doctor advice still carries a high currency in some European countries, such as France, where 44 percent of consumers would visit the doctor.

“There are vast differences in the way North American and European consumers access the OTC market,” said Varma. “While many North American consumers would rather treat common ailments with a quick visit to their local pharmacy, we see the opposite taking place in France, likely reflecting the generous nature of healthcare cost reimbursement that still operates in that country.”

The Nielsen survey also indicates that once a consumer wants to purchase a non-prescription medicine, self-selection of products by U.S. consumers is widespread across retail outlets, with only 25 percent of U.S. consumers relying on the recommendation of a pharmacist. This compares to 50 percent in Europe, where pharmacists continue to play an influential role.

Home Remedies

Several European and Asian countries prefer to rely on traditional home remedies. Consumers in Poland, Latvia, Russia, Germany and Switzerland were most likely to turn to age-old remedies rather than visit the doctor or pharmacy. Scandinavians, on the other hand, are more likely to ‘grin and bear it’ – one third of Danish (36 percent) and Norwegians (33 percent) lead the global rankings for taking ‘nothing at all’ to cure their health complaint.

Regional Ailments

The Nielsen Company’s multi-country survey revealed diverse regional differences among populations and their health problems. Consumers in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EEMEA) and Latin America suffer the most headaches – more than half in these regions said they had suffered a headache within the last month, while Asians (36 percent) were more susceptible to catching colds than any other region. North America topped the world for suffering backache and pain, while Latin America led the world for suffering with heartburn and back problems.

Indians, Japanese and Portuguese were the healthiest consumers, one in four claiming not to have suffered any health ailments at all in the previous month. At the other end of the scale, consumers in South Korea claimed to suffer from most ailments, topping global rankings for suffering from indigestion, colds, heartburn, indigestion and toothaches

State Narcotics Agent Charged With Selling Cialis

August 23, 2007

The supervisor of the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement’s anti-gang unit was charged Tuesday with selling the sex-aid drug Cialis to an undercover Long Beach police officer.

Henry Kim, a former Los Angeles policeman, was arrested Aug. 11 after allegedly agreeing to sell 50 of the erectile dysfunction pills for $250 to the undercover officer, who responded to an ad on the Craigslist.

The Long Beach City Attorney’s Office agreed to drop four misdemeanor counts against Kim, clearing the way for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to charge him with a felony for allegedly showing a false California driver’s license and a misdemeanor charge of dispensing and furnishing drugs.

Kim is due at the Long Beach courthouse on Sept. 6.

The 40-year-old Los Angeles resident worked as a Los Angeles police officer from 1989 to 1997. In August 1998, he was hired by the state and, in October 2004, was promoted to special agent supervisor.

Kim, who is based in Commerce, is on administrative leave from his job with the state agency.

Over-the-Counter Sex Pill Containing Prescription Compound Found in Cialis Recalled

August 18, 2007

Batches of an over-the-counter sex-enhancing pill that can purchased over the Internet have been recalled because they contain traces of the active ingredient found in the prescription medication Cialis.

The maker of Top Gun for Men Herbal Extracts said the pills could cause “serious health consequences” because they contain a compound similar to the drug tadalafil, News.com.au and other wire services are reporting. Tadalafil is an erectile dysfunction drug sold in the U.S. under the name Cialis.

Renewable petroleum from microbes

August 15, 2007

David Berry is sitting in a midtown Manhattan coffee shop, taking a break from a carbon-trading conference across the street, when a news report on the wall-mounted television catches his eye. The CNN dispatch describes how scientists have shown, in animal experiments, that Viagra might be used to alleviate symptoms of jet lag.

“It’s interesting,” Berry says, chuckling, as his eyes wander back to the screen. “We were talking about a year ago of using Viagra to treat jet lag.” One side effect of Viagra widely reported in the medical literature has been the perception of blue light, he continues, and blue light has also been shown to reset circadian clocks in humans. “I like when I see these things actually come true,” he says.

It’s one thought that never went beyond a blue-sky conversation among his venture capital colleagues. But it reflects how easily ideas come to Berry, a Harvard-trained MD who earned his PhD through the Biological Engineering Division at MIT and for the past two years has been a principal in the venture capital firm Flagship Ventures in Cambridge, MA.

Since receiving his bachelor’s degree from MIT in 2000, Berry has helped develop a way to treat stroke, thought up a new approach to cancer therapy, and, most recently, created a system to genetically engineer microbes to produce biofuels. He has 21 patent applications pending, and his intellectual curiosity touches on therapeutic medicine, diagnostic devices, and now, most notably, alternative energy technologies. His innovations in energy form the conceptual basis of LS9, a California-based renewable-petroleum company that has received $5 million in venture funding from Flagship and Khosla Ventures in California (see “Better Biofuels,” July/August 2007).

Berry points out that a number of the pioneering biotech companies were thinking about energy and biofuels, specifically ethanol, in the 1970s. “What’s interesting,” he says, “is that, as a field, we’re making a full circle and going back to the things biotechs thought about way back then. But now we’re bringing new technological tools to make the same problems more tractable.”

On the first working day of each week, Flagship Ventures holds a group meeting to review investments and discuss new ideas. One day this May, David Berry was the youngest, and probably the most earnest, of about a dozen VCs gathered in Flagship’s seventh-floor conference room, with its grand view of sailboats plying the Charles River. The meeting ran a little long, and Berry apologized when he finally emerged. “We were talking about a potential new idea in drug delivery,” he explained. Although the details of that technology remained discreetly fuzzy, it was very clear that these are heady, palpably exciting conversations for him. “You’re discussing some of the hottest, most compelling new technologies around,” he says. “I’m having a blast.”

Berry took a seat at that conference table with no formal training in finance but a track record in technology. In graduate school, he began tinkering with a molecule that could pass through the blood-brain barrier and showed promise as a stroke treatment. The protein, an engineered version of fibroblast growth factor 2, produced functional improvement in a test animal modeling symptoms of stroke, and it brought out in Berry another quality conducive to innovation: restlessness. Berry realized that studying the protein could lead to a PhD far more quickly than most projects, and he seized the occasion. He got his PhD in 2005 (finishing his MD a year later), and the biotech company ViaCell briefly attempted to develop the molecule as a drug

Zetia for cholesterol can still cause muscle pain

August 7, 2007

I have tried many statin drugs for cholesterol, but all gave me muscle pain and cramps. My doctor put me on Zetia and insists it can’t cause muscle pain because it is not absorbed into the bloodstream. I still have muscle pain, cramps and tingling in my legs and feet. Can Zetia cause this?

Although Zetia works differently from statin cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor or Zocor, it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Muscle side effects seem to be less common with Zetia than with statin drugs, but they can happen

Ask about another approach for cholesterol control.

I read that Proscar and Avodart both cause impotence. My boyfriend is on Proscar and recently said he would rather have a backrub than sex. According to his doctor, my friend has the smallest prostate he’s ever seen. Why do the doctors want to shrink it to nothing? Is it sex or death? If I had a choice like that to make, I’d go for sex. I have heard that it is possible for healthy people to have sex for life. Would it help if he didn’t take the pill for the weekend?

Drugs like Avodart and Proscar shrink the prostate by altering testosterone metabolism. This can lead to reduced libido and erectile dysfunction.

Although impotence may be treated with medications like Viagra or Cialis, there is no approved remedy for low libido.

It is not clear that a “drug holiday” on weekends would restore his sex drive. He might ask his doctor whether a lower dose might solve the libido problem and still protect his prostate
